Errors due to large size outlook PST files
PST files of Microsoft Outlook 2002 and earlier versions are saved in ANSI file format. For this ANSI file format, maximum file size of PST is set to 2 GB. Outlook data files of size 2 GB are well performing and respond quickly to any action taken including the time to load files. File size increase beyond 2 GB makes the files vulnerable. This limitation has been overcome in Outlook 2003 and 2007(except IMAP4 and HTTP accounts) which supports UNICODE format and 20 GB file size. That means Outlook 2003 and 2007 .pst file are comparatively less susceptible to destruction. Still when it comes to performance, problematic issues do take place that sometimes cause data loss. However, a way out to overcome such issue is to split 2 GB PST.
Once of all, on opening outlook, you may come across a message as-
“Errors have been detected in the file “file path”. Quit all mail enabled applications”.
File path indicates location where file is stored. The message accompanies recommendation to use inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe), which is hardly useful in resolving the problem. That is you continue receiving the error every time an attempt to open outlook is made.
Likewise, one or more encountered while processing different components – as “can’t copy the items. The file outlook.pst has reached its maximum size”, when files are copied.
Large sized file is cause for outlook pst file error taking place, but it is not yet damaged and inbuilt is thus none of help. Reminders messages are generated when size files reaches to or about 1.82 GB, particularly when an item is added to PST folder that may make PST file size go beyond 2 GB.
Archiving the PST files, compacting and if possible you should also try deleting the unnecessary email, attachments, calendar, notes etc to resolve errors due to large size Outlook PST file. In addition to these, it is preferable to split PST to avoid errors from occurring rather than splitting or repairing after the error has taken place.
